Below are tools and materials as well as a step-by-step procedure for performing a salt replenishment: What you will need Commercial-quality water softener salt – Be sure to choose salt that is formulated for use in commercial water softening units and avoid salt that hasn’t been properly cleaned to remove foreign debris such as sand and other sludge-causing particles. Consult with your manufacturer’s representative for assistance in obtaining the proper softening salt. Drain tubes – These tubes are designed to fit on the softener’s intake and outflow valves during the cleaning process. If you do not have a manufacturer-supplied pair of tubes, then you can use other rubber or plastic tubing that snugly fits the valve outlets. Clean cloth Adjustable wrench or socket set Five-gallon bucket How to replenish the tank While individual brine tanks vary in their specific design based on the system, manually-controlled water softeners use a similar operating sequence. To avoid damaging attached equipment, such as dishwashers, be sure that you power down these devices to prevent accidental operation without an available water supply. 2. Release the pressure inside the brine tank – Before you attempt to open the top of the brine tank, you must release the water pressure inside the tank. Attempting to open a pressurized brine tank could lead to injury or damage. To reduce the reduce the pressure, attach one end of the drain tube to the intake valve’s bypass connector and place the other end inside an empty five-gallon bucket. While holding the tube to maintain control, slowly turn the intake valve from its operational setting to a bypass or maintenance setting and allow the pressurized water to flow into the bucket. Once the water stops flowing or is merely dripping from the tube, then you are ready to remove the top of the tank. 3. Remove the top of the brine tank – After relieving pressure from the tank, you can remove the top of the tank in order to add water softener salt. Some tank lids are attached using a hand-turned screw and clamp system, so simply turn them counterclockwise by hand to loosen and remove the clamp. If your brine tank uses a lid attached via a bolt or other mechanical fastener, then use an adjustable wrench or socket in the appropriate size to loosen and remove the fastener. The drastic decrease in the number of office building structural fires may be contributed to advancements in the technology of fire and life safety systems. One of the most intriguing of these technological advancements is the programmable logic controller. If you manage an office building that has not yet been retrofitted with the newest technology, you may be wondering what a programmable logic controller does in a fire and life safety system. The programmable logic controller, or PLC for short, is the computer system that controls when to shut down mechanical and electrical systems and turns on sprinklers and ventilation systems. Here’s what a PLC does. Recognizes dangerous levels of heat and smoke Sensors that detect heat and smoke are located throughout the building. The readings from the sensors are monitored by the PLC. Once the readings become too high when heat and/or smoke are detected, the PLC uses logic to determine if, when, and where there is a fire. The computer system then shuts down and turns on various systems simultaneously to prevent the fire from spreading throughout the building, begin fire suppression, and save lives. Shuts down electrical circuitry, elevators, and other systems Depending on the location of the fire and/or smoke, the PLC may shut down the entire electrical circuitry of the building or just a section of it. The PLC is programmed to recognize the needs to save life and property within the building based on the location of the problem. Elevators are immediately taken to the ground level and shut down with the doors opened. This is one of the life saving aspects of the system. It prevents people who are trying to escape the building from getting trapped in an elevator. All necessary mechanical systems within the building are also shut down, including computer systems. In industrial or manufacturing facilities, the mechanical systems are also shut down. Turns on sprinklers, emergency lighting and ventilation systems At the same time, other systems are being turned on. Sprinklers above and nearest to the fire immediately douse the flames. The emergency lighting system turns on so people who are exiting the building can see their way out. The ventilation system is also controlled by the PLC. The dampers of the HVAC system are closed. This prevents the smoke from getting into the ducts and spreading to the rest of the building. During your efforts to streamline your manufacturing plant’s operations, you may decide your company needs a manufacturing production software package. If you are unsure of how to begin gathering information about each package, below are four questions to get you started during the preliminary meeting with the sales representative. Is A License Required For Each Computer? If your company uses multiple computers in its office and on the factory floor, ask if a license is required for each computer. Ideally, the software package can be installed on all of the computers using one concurrent use license. This would prevent you from having to purchase one for each computer or employee accessing the program. For example, you may have four computers in your office and ten computers on the production line. When asking about the license requirements, you may want to inquire about packages that accommodate at least 15 users. Or, you could decide to go with a package that supports 20 users if you expect significant growth in the near future. Can More Than One Scheduler Simultaneously Use The Program? The software scheduler is responsible for inputting invoices, orders, and progress. If you have several different departments in your factory, ask if more than one scheduler can use the program simultaneously. This would cut back on time  having to coordinate the use of the software between multiple master users. For example, you may want the head of each department to have a master scheduler designation so they can input data at the end of each shift. One department may need to record the progress of the assembly line’s production, while another may need to input the amount of materials used for inventory purposes. By having a software that grants access to more than one master user at a time would increase efficiency because they would not have to wait in line to input their end-of-shift data. This could also save money by not having to pay the employee overtime for having to stay over just to record information in the computer. Does The Software Allow For Work-In-Progress Reporting At The End Of Each Shift? If your company manages large orders that span several shifts to complete them, ask about the ability to input work-in-progress reporting at the end of each. When you first start TIG welding with copper for your metal fabrication projects, you may be given some misinformation that could ruin your finished results or put you at risk for serious injury. Below are four misconceptions and the truth about what you really need to be doing. Having Helium Or A Helium-Argon Mixture As Your Shielding Gas Some fabricators may argue that having helium or a helium-argon mixture works best as your shielding gas. However, helium is not ideal for two reasons. First, it burns at higher temperature than is needed for use with copper. It could warp the metal and overheat your tungsten electrode. Second, although helium is a gas, it is denser than the air. When used as a shielding gas, it gathers at the welding spot and contaminates the weld. This will cause gas bubbles in the finished project, giving you a weaker weld that could crack or break under pressure. Instead of using helium, use argon as your shielding gas. It is much lighter than helium, decreasing the chance of gas contamination of the weld. It also burns at a temperature that melts the copper without damaging your equipment. Sharpening Your Tungsten Electrode Into A Radial Ground Tip Some welders believe you should grind the tip of the tungsten electrode into a radial ground tip when welding copper. The premise behind this misconception may seem sound, since it may seem logical that a sharper tip will give you better control over the pulse. However, the tiny point creates an arch wander wave that is difficult to predict and control. When working with copper, use a straight ground tip. The flattened tip gives you a more stable arc, giving you precise control over the pulse. Cooling Off Your Copper Using Water Because copper is a rapid conductor of heat and electricity, the metal becomes hot soon after you start welding it. One trick some welders use is to submerge the non-weld points in cold water to rapidly cool it. However, doing this could not only ruin the weld but could be dangerous. Whenever you are welding any type of metal, it must be dry to keep water molecules from contaminating and weakening the weld. Although your work area is not submerged in water, it is still exposed to droplets and condensation. Submerging copper in water while you are welding it is also extremely dangerous. Both the metal and water are conductors. When combined together with the welding pulse, the combination could cancel out your ground, increasing your chances of electrocution. To keep the metal cool while you are working, lay it down on a steel table. The steel will disperse the heat and draw it away from the copper. Place a fan to blow underneath the table to circulate the air and further cool the metal. Even with using the above suggestion, you need to take a three minute break from welding every four feet.
